Humidity and Temperature

Using Hygrometers to Measure Temperature and Humidity

A hygrometer is an instrument used to measure humidity – the amount of moisture in the air. Most hygrometers measure not just the humidity of a room but also the temperature of the surroundings. Why is it necessary to have this type of instrument at home, work or office or business establishment? With regard to home application of hygrometer, this instrument helps determine if the temperature and humidity is favorable to young children. It is rather difficult to know if young children are comfortable with the temperature because what may be normal temperature and humidity for adults may not be tolerable for young children. With the aid of hygrometers, we can set the appropriate temperature suitable for young children. With this, certain illnesses which are the effect of extreme temperature and humidity may be prevented.

Whatever application you may find the hygrometer useful, it is a fact that it is that every place has a different humidity or temperature. That is why hygrometers are widely used and it is a wise move if you have more so that you can monitor the different and equally important places or buildings where humidity and temperature must be maintained within tolerable levels.

One brand of hygrometer which is popular and useful is the Mason hygrometer. Aside from its function and reliability, all its parts are replaceable. This is the added convenience and cost-effectiveness of Mason hygrometers as you don't need to replace the entire equipment once a part of it is broken.

Whirling hygrometers are maintenance-free. This means that users are spared of the hassle of maintaining the product after purchasing it. So whether you use the hygrometer on a daily basis, or on occasional or seasonal basis, there is no need to maintain it or purchase another after sometime.

Now, digital hygrometers are the new innovations, and it is rapidly becoming popular. Aside from its safety and simplicity, it is user-friendly so one need not be a rocket scientist to be able to operate it.

As regards people who have pets, hygrometers are a must-have tool. Some pets are highly sensitive to changes in temperature and humidity. That is why using hygrometers can warn pet-owners when to set the room temperature that would be comfortable to pets. Farmers also find useful application for hygrometers. With this tool, farmers can make sure that the animals which are living outside the house are neither exposed to extreme hot nor cold temperatures.

Simple way to Measure Desirable Indoor Humidity Levels

In almost any home, it is imperative that the level of humidity is maintained at favorable conditions not only for reasons of comfort but also in order to keep the inhabitants healthy and prevent changes in temperature-related illnesses. But how do we determine what humidity is favorable to healthy living conditions? There are several factors to consider in determining the ideal humidity for our homes or workplace.

Firstly, we have to consider the composition of the construction of the house. Homes built with materials that retain water vapor in the walls trap more heat during hot weather and keep moisture during cold weather. This is because the vapor barriers in the walls prevent the condensation in the walls. In hot summer months, absent any proper ventilation system in homes causes water vapor to seep through the walls thereby damaging them and sometimes appearance of molds on walls are noticed.

Human beings can adjust to the humidity level ranging from twenty percent to sixty percent (20% - 60%). However, the ideal humidity would still depend on the temperature outside the house or building. As for example, when the outside temperature is 20 degrees Fahrenheit and over, the appropriate relative humidity should be from 35% to 40%, 30% when the outside temperature is 10 degrees, and 25%, 20%, and 15% relative humidity for temperatures of zero, 10 degrees below zero, and 20degrees below zero respectively.

What are the things observed to give us an indication of the level of humidity in the house? Try doing any of these simple and practical ways. Place three ice cubes in a glass of water and stir it for a few times and wait for around three minutes to elapse. If there is no moisture formed outside the glass, it means that the air inside the house is too dry and the humidity is low. In this case, a humidifier may be needed. Upon the other hand, if humidity is too high or saturated, moisture or droplets of water would be formed outside the glass which signals that the air can no longer accommodate water vapor into it. Another indication of high level of humidity is the fogging of windows, and the appearance of molds and moisture on walls and ceilings. With this simple steps, one can determine the humidity and condition of the air inside the house.

Why Humid Days Are Warm and Sticky

Why is it necessary to know how humidity affects our daily activities? Most individuals do not pay attention to the level of humidity inside their homes or workplace. When the air is saturated or the level of humidity is high, we feel uncomfortable and warm. This is because we perspire a lot and the air can not absorb vapors anymore and that is why we feel sticky because the sweat cannot evaporate from our skin. This is the main reason why humidifiers and dehumidifiers are needed in homes or offices. The estimated level of humidity to keep us comfortable is from about 30% to 60%, and the mid point of that level is regarded as the ideal figure. That is precisely the reason why offices and workplaces are equipped with air conditioners in order to ensure that the workers are comfortable in the work place and their level of productivity is not affected or compromised due to the humidity level.
